Tributes to Buddhist Champion

A Buddhist who greatly influenced dialogue between people of different faiths in the Midlands has died at the age of 58.

Mrs. Fuengsin Trafford, from Hagley, died from cancer in St. Mary's Hospice, Selly Oak, Birmingham, last week.

She is being remembered at several Buddhist centres this week, including a ceremony in the Tibetan Temple [Karma Ling] in Edgbaston, and the Thai Temple [Wat Sanghathan] in Handsworth.

She was remembered on Sunday in the Forest Hermitage [Wat Pah Santidhamma], near Warwick. There will be a cremation on Thursday at Stourbridge Crematorium.

Dr. Mary Hall, a Roman Catholic who headed Birmingham's Multi Faith Centre, and the Rev. Andrew Wingate, Anglican director of the College of the Ascension, are to pay tribute to her.

Mrs. Trafford, who is originally from Thailand, gave lectures at the Multi Faith Centre and at the Selly Oak Colleges and was well known for her ability to communicate Buddhism.

"She was humorous and a great person of fun. She enabled a great range of Christians to understand Buddhism. When she was in the hospice she was happy to receive both Buddhist meditations and Christian prayers," said Rev. Wingate.

Mrs. Trafford came to Britain more than 30 years ago to train as a teacher in London. She stayed to marry Tony, a Roman Catholic. They have a son, Paul, aged 26.
